If you’re new to the area, or just haven’t made your way out into the Summerville local scene with your family yet, I have some awesome places for you to try for breakfast, lunch, OR dinner (or every meal)!

In a place like Summerville, you’re bound to find unique little shops and restaurants that can’t be found anywhere else. With the local atmosphere beaming with sweet southern charm and plenty of “y’alls” to go around, Summerville is also known for its delicious eateries!

  1. Toast (of Summerville)

This little gem actually has two locations - one in Summerville and one downtown Charleston. Located on Old Trolley Road in Summerville, Toast boasts a menu fit for everyone at your table full of rich flavors and lots of butter (hey, it IS the south). French toast drips with deliciously sticky syrup, shrimp and grits light up the taste buds with bold flavors, and pancakes are a hit on the kid scene! This restaurant hits the middle of the ball park on the budget scale and is an awesome option for everyone.

  1. Alex’s Restaurant

If you’re looking for that small town breakfast and lunch diner, you’ve found it at Alex’s! This diner truly makes you feel like you are amongst friends and family every time you go. The menu is down-home, southern food with everything from breakfast home fries to juicy burgers. It’s the perfect Sunday afternoon spot or Saturday morning breakfast joint. You’re sure to become a regular after just one visit!

  1. Shuckin’ Shack Oyster Bar

Seafood lovers rejoice! You’ve just found the perfect little dive spot to enjoy delicious seafood with the whole family! It’s situated right in the middle of downtown Summerville and has an awesome inside and outside sitting area. The small venue makes it feel super cozy and inviting! If you’re looking for a place to go without your entire crew one night (because mom and dad do need some time together, right), they also have an awesome atmosphere at night with great music, drinks, and, of course, incredible food! Overall, this is a place that is as versatile as it is delicious! Head to Shuckin’ Shack to watch the big game to cheer on your favorite team OR for a weeknight meal when the kitchen just isn’t calling your name!

  1. Ye Ole Fashioned Ice Cream and Sandwich Shop

Remember those ice cream shops that used to be everywhere back in the 50’s and 60’s? Ye Ole Fashioned Ice Cream and Sandwich Shop IS just like that (minus the poodle skirts). With two locations in Summerville (Old Trolley Road and Main Street), you are sure to find yourself at this cute little shop a time or two. Burgers, BLTs, ice cream, and games - it really has it all! The best part? The machines are play-until-you-win! So, for your little ones who like the arcade games, you won’t spend a fortune for that stuffed animal! 50 cents and you are guaranteed to win! Great food and guaranteed prizes - what more could you want?

  1. Joe Bessinger’s BBQ

You cannot come to the south without trying barbecue. That would just be wrong. Bessinger’s (as the locals call it) is a neat barbecue joint tucked in behind the trees off of College Park Road. The serving sizes are large, the food is hot, and your belly will surely thank you! This is one of the most affordable spots for barbecue around, but the price doesn’t mean there’s a lack in taste! The barbecue is seasoned perfectly with your choice of mustard or ketchup-based barbecue sauce. This is a place your entire family could eat for a very affordable price any night of the week! Headed out the local football game on Friday night? Grab some barbecue first at Bessinger’s! You won’t regret it.

There are so many great spots in Summerville for you and the family to enjoy, but these are must-tries first! If you aren’t a resident of the birthplace of sweet tea yet, these spots are exactly where you need to go on your next visit or house hunting journey!
